MONTREAL — A Black man who was wrongfully arrested and detained for six days last year has settled a $1.2-million lawsuit against the City of Montreal.

The law firm representing Mamadi Camara says in a statement today he does not want to divulge the value of the settlement, but he and his relatives are satisfied with the agreement.

Camara, 31, was arrested and detained on Jan. 28, 2021 after he was accused of attacking a Montreal police officer, stealing his service weapon and shooting at him.

He was released from detention on Feb. 5 and video and DNA evidence ultimately exonerated him, prompting Montreal’s police chief to apologize.
