Russian troops move into Ukraine – western sanctions announced
OTTAWA – Western leaders are moving quickly to impose sanctions on Russia in response to President Vladimir Putin’s decision to move Russian troops across the border into eastern Ukraine.
Putin made the move last night (February 21) after announcing Russia would recognize the independence of two rebel-held areas in eastern Ukraine. He claims Russian troops will act as peacekeepers in the two areas.
From Europe to North America, world leaders are condemning the Russian move.
Germany has moved to halt the process of certifying a gas pipeline from Russia. Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Britain is slapping sanctions on five Russian banks and three wealthy Russian business leaders with interests in energy and infrastructure.
