KAMLOOPS — An investigation is underway after the discovery of a homemade explosive device and firearms at the location of the former Duchess strip club and Northbridge Hotel.

The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was called at around 4 p.m. Friday (Feb. 18) after police received a complaint of an unwanted guest who refused to leave the apartment residence.

Kamloops RCMP say the unit’s occupants eventually exited the apartment. Two men were arrested, but one was quickly released. The area was cleared, and police found two pellet guns and a taped-up item that contained an explosive device. Cst. Crystal Evelyn says the EDU disposed the explosive item, and the suspect was released with a court date.

ASK Wellness says it began providing interim property management and tenant support for the 55 units at the address after the City of Kamloops purchased the former Duchess strip club and Northbridge Hotel on 377 Tranquille Rd. in September 2021. The organization – that serves Kamloops residents who struggle with their housing, health, or employment – says its staff brought concerns of criminal activities in one of the units to Kamloops RCMP.

“This resident had previously been served an eviction notice,” ASK Wellness states. “The ongoing eviction process remains underway within the jurisdiction of the BC Residential Tenancy Board… We will continue to ensure the individuals who reside in this building remain safe and supported during our tenure managing the building.”

ASK Wellness says the eviction process is often delayed by regulations within B.C.’s Residential Tenancy.

Anyone with information of the incident is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2022-5354.
