CSRD Board of Directors vote to postpone logging in areas affected by Two Mile wildfire

SICAMOUS, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) directors say they are not supporting a proposal to conduct salvage logging in the Sicamous and Wiseman Creek watersheds.
In a news release, the CSRD says it’s due to the high risk of landslides following the Two Mile wildfire near Sicamous in summer 2021.
The board was responding to a referral from BC Timber Sales, which is proposing to conduct salvage logging of burnt timber in the area. The directors voted unanimously during Thursday’s (Feb. 17) meeting to recommend a temporary ban on logging in the affected areas until 2024 when vegetation should regrow and stabilize the slopes in the Two Mile, Sicamous Creek, and Wiserman Creek drainages.
The CSRD says the Shuswap Emergency Program and the District of Sicamous have been working with residents of the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park – which is located at the base of Wiseman Creek – since December 2021 to make them aware of the threat.
