Kamloops nightclubs and event venues getting ready to open at full capacity

KAMLOOPS — As of 11:59 p.m. tonight (Feb. 16), event venues and gatherings will be allowed at full capacity.

For the Blue Grotto nightclub, filling the dance floor with people won’t be a problem. But with opening up on such short notice, staffing is a challenge.

“We are looking for staff, we’re looking for servers. Just opening up quickly, one of my bartenders is racing snow mobiles this weekend. Another one just has other commitments. We’ll struggle through that, we’ll get through that, even if I have to bartend myself,” David “Puppy” Johnston, Blue Grotto Nightclub owner says.

Despite the hurdle, Johnston says opening up at full capacity is the only way nightclubs can survive.

“I don’t think it will take long at all to become solvent again. Yeah, we’ve got some debts to pay. Yeah, we’re behind the eight ball, but you can’t look back, you’ve got to look forward,” he says.

With vaccine verification and mask-wearing still mandated, people will be allowed to dance and mingle in public spaces for the first time in a long time.

According to the BC Centre for Disease control, only 55 per cent of the Kamloops population over the age of 18 received a booster shot. Dr. Carol Fenton, Interior Health medical health officer, says if you plan on socializing, the best way to protect yourself and those around you is to get the shot and keep practicing COVID-19 safety protocols.

“The mask mandate and the vaccine passport are still protection measures in place. And you know, I would say, take it easy. We are all adjusting to the new normal and it may be less comfortable for those around us. And definitely stay home if you have symptoms,” Fenton explains.

The Colombo Lodge is happy to follow any COVID-19 protocols if it means filling the hall at full capacity.

“Restrictions are really minor in my view. It does open the door for us to get back to what we do best. We’re really geared up and excited about doing that,” Ross Spina, Colombo Lodge president says.

But Spina says he’s unsure if big weddings and events will be desired going forward.

“I think the question of order is all dependent of course is on the demand. I’m hoping our demand will continue to increase daily,” he says.
