KAMLOOPS — The Canada 55-plus Games are finally scheduled to take place in Kamloops after a two-year delay.

The city was originally supposed to host the national games for seniors 55-and-over in 2020, but the games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The games feature physical challenges such as ice and mind-bending endeavours like scrabble, whist and duplicate bridge.

Henry Pejril, president and co-chair of the Kamloops Host Committee, says they’ve been planning the Canada 55-plus games for the city since 2018.

“I’m particularly proud of and grateful to the many board members who have been able to remain to see this event through, in effect stretching our commitment to a full four years,” Pejril says. “We are so happy for the opportunity to once again showcase our city on a national scale.”

The 2022 Canada 55-plus Games are expected to welcome over 2,500 athletes in 26 sports and will include both opening and closing ceremonies and a variety of cultural events hosted nightly during the week of competition.

Additionally, qualifying athletes are determined through provincial competitions. The 2022 games will include a local component where athletes from the host city will be able to compete, meaning Kamloops’ team could be as large as 270 participants.

According to a news releasee on Tuesday (Feb. 8), a volunteering drive will begin closer to the games’ start date.

The 2022 Canada 55-plus Games will take place between Aug. 23 and 26. It’s the first time the games will be played in B.C.
