New B.C. Liberal caucus roles unveiled

The B.C. Liberals will keep Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond as the leader of the official opposition, at least until new party leader Kevin Falcon is able to win a seat in the B.C. Legislature.

Falcon was elected party leader on Saturday and said his plan was to quickly seek a seat in the house, noting former leader Andrew Wilkinson has decided to resign his seat in Vancouver-Quilchena.

The NDP government has six months to call a byelection.

Bond announced the following appointments in the B.C. Liberal caucus today:

  • Opposition whip: MLA Doug Clovechok
  • Opposition deputy whip: MLA Lorne Doerkson
  • Opposition critic for finance: MLA Peter Milobar
  • Opp0ositon critic for health, seniors services and long-term care: MLA Shirley Bond
  • Opposition critic for housing: MLA Mike Bernier
  • Opposition critic for gender equity, accessibility, inclusion & sport: MLA Stephanie Cadieux
  • Opposition critic for mental health and addictions and Translink: MLA Trevor Halford
  • Opposition critic for education, children and family development and childcare: MLA Karin Kirkpatrick
  • Opposition critic for labour and skills training: MLA Greg Kyllo
  • Opposition critic for Indigenous relations and reconciliation: MLA Michael Lee
  • Opposition critic for environment and climate change: MLA Renee Merrifield
  • Opposition critic for energy and LNG: MLA Ellis Ross
  • Opposition critic for transportation and infrastructure: MLA Ben Stewart

Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes has been elected to the position of caucus chair, while Fraser Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart’s name is being put forward as the nominee for assistant deputy speaker.
