Merritt-area MP Albas hasn’t considered leadership bid

MERRITT, B.C. — As the fallout from Wednesday’s move by federal Conservative MPs to remove Erin O’Toole from leadership continues to filter out, names will begin to surface regarding potential new leaders of the party.

It’s believe that Pierre Poilievre will be the front runner for the position, if he chooses to run. Poilievre was prepared to run in 2020, but backed out just before the launch of his campaign.

Central Okanagan Similkameen Nicola MP Dan Albas isn’t prepared to jump into that race.

“I haven’t given that any thought. But really that’s up to my colleagues to see if they see me in that frame. For me, there is no small part here, everybody needs to do their job, and I’m happy to do whatever tasks I’m handed, as along as I’m meeting the needs of our riding first,” said Albas.

Albas noted that he is focused on holding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to account on promises made to B.C. Following the floods.

“What we are talking about right now is moving past these questions of leadership and more onto holding the government to account,” said Albas.

“My job as MP and my focus these past few weeks here in Ottawa have been laser focused on holding Mr. Trudeau accountable for promises made to places like Merritt and Princeton, who have suffered fires and floods. That is my key driving focus right now, anything else that distracts away from those things, we need to put past us, Canadians are counting on us, Merrittonians are counting on me,” added Albas.

While the party searches for a new leader, MP Candice Bergen from Manitoba will serve as interim leader.
