KAMLOOPS — Boogie the Bridge is back! Organizers are gathered at Colombo Lodge Tuesday (Feb.1) morning to announce that the run will return after a two-year hiatus.

“We are so excited and very, very grateful to be back. We’ll be the first event to be back, we’ll be very safe. Just to have that amazing community come together to connect, heal, be kind, and of course run or walk, or stroll or dance, whatever makes your heart sing,” Boogie the Bridge founder Jo Berry says.

Berry’s goal is to encourage people to get out and get active, which will bolster their mental well-being. She started the initiative 25 years ago after a life-changing experience.

“I lost my dear mom from depression and started to connect the dots between moving outdoors and mental health,” Berry says.

Proceeds from this year’s Boogie the Bridge will be donated to Western Canada Theatre. The organization has deep roots in supporting youth in the community. It says the money will go toward various educational programs.

“Just within this past year, we have launched our hub for creative learning which has many different programs for youth, for schools, for teachers, for theatre education, for kids to build confidence and that’s what this is going to go towards,” Western Canada Theatre Director of Marketing Chelsea Isenor says.

After a prolonged closure caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Western Canada Theatre says the fundraising is vital.

“Any support we get from our community is so beneficial and so helpful for us to keep moving forward and keep providing professional live theatre for Kamloops as well as youth theatre education,” Isenor adds.

Berry says she’s excited to see the Kamloops community work on their mind, body, and soul.

“Movement is change. It changes our brain chemistry, dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins… and helps us heal and be physically healthy. It’s all connected,” Berry says.

On Sunday, April 24, participants will run for five, 10, or 21 kilometres at various locations across Kamloops — each boogie-ing across Overlander’s Bridge.
