KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP reports that three vehicles have been stolen in the last week after drivers left them idling with keys in the ignition.

Police say the first two thefts occurred in front of the same Aberdeen business on the 1800-block of Highway 5A on Sunday (Jan. 23), while the third was outside a business on the 1000-block of Hillside Drive on Tuesday (Jan. 25).

One truck has been recovered so far, although RCMP say a silver Honda Civic with Alberta marker BKX7049 and a black Audi with B.C. marker MB 011G are still outstanding.

Kamloops residents are reminded to take their keys with them when they exit their vehicles, especially if they’re running.

“Even if you’re close to your vehicle and can see it from where you are, when the keys are left in the ignition it presents an opportunity for thieves to quickly steal it,” Cpl. Dana Napier says. “Even if it’s locked, it takes a minute to smash a window and hop in.”

An unlocked vehicle with its keys inside is considered an unsecure vehicle, an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Anyone who sees or has information related to the two remaining stolen vehicles are asked to contact Kamloops RCMP.
