Parking fees to return to B.C. hospitals

VICTORIA — Hospitals in B.C. will begin charging for parking for visitors, staff and some patients after waiving fees since April 1, 2020.

Free parking at provincial health-care facilities will continue for patients undergoing dialysis treatments, cancer treatments in acute-care programs and for parents of children staying overnight in the hospital. Volunteers can also park for free and those with financial problems will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Health Minister Adrian Dix says that people were taking advantage of the free parking by using the spots while not conducting business at the hospital.

“Maintaining across-the-board free hospital parking is making it hard for patients, staff, volunteers and visitors to find a spot,” says Dix. “These hospital parking spots must be available for those who need them most.”

Parking rates have been frozen for more than four years and this freeze is set to continue.

The Ministry of Health says pay-parking stations are being modernized so patients and visitors can pay without having to return to their vehicles or use a meter. Visitors can use and app or touch-free payment options.
