Provincial COVID-19 hospitalizations climb to 895 Wednesday, 13 new virus-related deaths recorded

VICTORIA — Hospitalizations continue to climb in B.C, with the province reporting 895 people in hospital Wednesday (Jan. 19), up 41 from the previous day.

The amount of people in intensive care also grew slightly today to 115 (up by 3).

As of Wednesday, there are 35,770 active cases of COVID-19 recorded in B.C. The province is also reporting 2,387 new cases.

Within Interior Health, there have been 550 new cases recorded, with 5,769 active cases.

In the past 24 hours, 13 new virus-related deaths have been reported, one of which took place in Interior Health.

There have been five new health-care facility outbreaks reported today, for a total of 56 facilities with ongoing outbreaks. This includes Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Home in Kamloops.

From Jan. 11-17, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 25.9 per cent of cases and from Jan. 4-17, they accounted for 31.8 per cent of hospitalizations.

As of Wednesday, 89.3 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 83.4 per cent have received their second dose.

In addition, 92.4 per cent of eligible people 12 and older have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 89.7 per cent received their second dose, and 35.5 per cent have received a third dose.

  • 260 new cases in Northern Health * Total active cases: 1,504
  • 275 new cases in Island Health * Total active cases: 2,095
  • one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada * Total active cases: 16
