KAMLOOPS – The Shuswap Lifeboat Society has received a $250,000 grant to support the construction of a boathouse that act as a water rescue base for the Shuswap Lake system.

When construction is complete, it will house two rescue boats and be the centre for boating safety on the lake.

The grant from the Community Gaming Capital Project Program, tops a five year fundraising effort for the decade old society.

“Since we began ten years ago, we have had many achievements, but by far, realizing this modern Rescue Base is our greatest.” said Shuswap Lifeboat Society president Bruce Weicker. “It is so gratifying to acknowledge how the communities we serve have rallied behind this project, so greatly needed to enhance the level of service we perform and deliver across the Shuswap Lake system.”

The boathouse will be known as Station #106 and be located in Sicamous where a suitable site has been identified. It’s construction is being aided by a grant from the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and a loan from the Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union.

“This facility will save thousands of dollars in maintenance costs and eliminate many hours of volunteers shovelling snow and ice to ensure our vessels can be activated at a moments notice,” said Rob Sutherland, the Station Leader for #160 Shuswap.”

Construction is expected to being this summer.

The Shuswap Lifeboat Society was formed in 2012 and is the first and only Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue organization on inland waters in British Columbia. It operates 24 hours a day on Shuswap Lake and Mara Lake and is volunteer based.
