Chase Secondary School returns to in-person learning after one-day closure

CHASE, B.C. — Chase Secondary School will return to in-person classes tomorrow (Jan. 19) after a one-day functional closure.

Though no reason was given for the closure, in a letter to parents, the school said on Tuesday (Jan. 17) it did not have enough staff to supervise and instruct students.

School District 73 (SD73) spent the day redeploying staff and resources to make sure fill-in staff were ready to teach classes.

“It’s to say, ‘alright I’m teaching on behalf of this teacher, I’ve never taught this subject before, I didn’t know I’d be teaching here’ and it’s really just to regroup and make sure they have the supplies they need, and kids have the technology they need,” SD73 Superintendent Rhonda Nixon says.

The district says they are anticipating further functional closures amid rapid Omicron spread and it is taking steps to minimize interruptions to face-to-face learning.

“The goal in the Continuity of Learning plan is to keep kids at school as long as it’s safe and as long as we have the staff to instruct them. So we know it’s safe and we know we have enough staff in place to instruct them. And we know that staff is prepared,” Nixon says.
