Elizabeth Fry Society’s Rent Bank providing grants to Merritt and area renters affected by flooding
KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry’s (Kamloops E Fry) Rent Bank is distributing one-time grants to qualified renters in Merritt and area who have been severely affected by the floods in mid-November 2021.
Since Nov. 15, when the Coldwater River flooded, Kamloops E Fry says its Rent Bank program received many calls from evacuated Merritt residents who needed urgent financial help to get temporary accommodations for themselves and their families.
“The majority of these renters were ineligible for a no-interest loan from the Rent Bank, due to lost income, loss of jobs, or other factors,” Kamloops E Fry states. “Many families are currently using any debt they can access to put a roof over their head. Thanks to United Way British Columbia, our charitable society is glad for the opportunity to help renters at risk of becoming homeless during this unprecedented time of need.”
Flood Response Housing Grants are for low to moderate-income renters who are struggling to pay rent, utilities, or damage deposit as a result of the floods. Applications are open immediately.
