Coquihalla Highway experiences numerous closures over 24-hour stretch

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.) — The Coquihalla Highway is now fully open in both directions Hope and Merritt. DriveBC says drivers can expect some delays to continue due to congestion.

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS — It’s been a challenging 24 hours for drivers on the Coquihalla Highway.

Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt closed in both directions Monday (Jan. 10) night due to multiple vehicle incidents.

After reopening, the Coquihalla closed again Tuesday (Jan. 11) morning due to multiple collisions, according to DriveBC. The multi-vehicle crash happened between Exit 202 and 286.

The highway is open to southbound traffic from Merritt to Hope but remains closed northbound with no estimated time of reopening. DriveBC tells southbound drivers to expected delays due to heavy congestions, and to drive with caution.
