B.C. records nine new virus-related deaths Friday, with increases in active caseload and hospitalizations

VICTORIA — The province saw further increases in active COVID-19 case counts and hospitalizations today (Jan. 7), with B.C recording 3,144 new cases.

As of Friday, B.C has 33,184 active cases (up by 1,964) and of those, 349 people are currently in hospital (up by 25), with 93 being treated in intensive care (up by 3).

The Interior Health region recorded 526 new cases today for a total of 3,183 active cases.

Additionally, the province says nine new virus-related fatalities have been identified – none of the deaths took place in the Interior.

There have been two new health-care facility outbreaks within Fraser Health, for a total of 38 facilities in this province with ongoing outbreaks. This includes the outbreak at Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops.

The new/active cases include:

  • 1,416 new cases in Fraser Health. Total active cases: 15,704
  • 483 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health. Total active cases: 9,449
  • 526 new cases in Interior Health. Total active cases: 3,183
  • 244 new cases in Northern Health. Total active cases: 935
  • 475 new cases in Island Health. Total active cases: 3,906
  • no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada. Total active cases: seven

As of Friday, 88.5 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 83.1 per cent have received their second dose.

In addition, 92.1 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 89.4 per cent have received their second dose and 23.5 per cent have received a third dose.
