KAMLOOPS — Kamloops has been named as the host of next year’s Scotties, the national women’s curling championships.

Curling Canada made the announcement at the noon hour on Thursday (Jan. 6) with the event running from Feb. 17-26, 2023 at the Sandman Centre.

It’s the first time Kamloops will be hosting the Scotties, but the city is not a stranger to major curling events, hosting the Brier in 1996 and 2014.

“So exciting,” said vice-chair Linda Bolton. “I waited a long time for this. I’ve been part of the event for over 22 years and it means a lot to me. The Kruger family is amazing to women across Canada, and to bring it to my hometown and bring all my curling family here, it’s really something special.”

Kamloops will become the second city in the world to host the Scotties, the Brier, the Men’s and Women’s World Curling Championships and the Canada Cup of Curling.

The city estimates the Scotties will bring $5 million of economic impact. While the event is still a year out, the benefits will help a tourism industry that has suffered from the pandemic.

“Certainly the tourism and hospitality industries will step up and host the nation, but also the curling clubs, the volunteers, and that feeling of connectedness and getting back to doing what we do best here in Kamloops.”

The city is currently hosting the B.C. Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships at the Kamloops Curling Club.
