KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops bus driver was recently recognized on social media for helping an elderly woman navigate the snowy sidewalk of Tranquille Road.

Operator Darren Kiesman was driving his Route 1 Tranquille bus when he saw a woman struggling to get from the roadway onto the sidewalk in heavy slush and snow.

“The whole sidewalk looked pretty bad and I knew I had the vehicle to help her, so I just pulled up next to her and dropped the bus down so she could get on,” said Kiesman.

Derek Molter was driving east when he saw Kiesman’s bus abruptly cut over to pick up the woman.

“Keeping in mind that this is not a regular city bus stop, I couldn’t believe it when I saw him stop and lower the bus right where she was standing,” said Molter in a Facebook post on a community page.

Kiesman found out that the woman had been on his bus route before and was currently trying to get to her retirement home a block down the road.

“When she got off, she told me I was her angel for the day, which was nice,” said Kiesman.

Molter called BC Transit to recognize Kiesman’s good deed.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what Darren did for that person, who could have been really impacted by a bad fall in those conditions,” said Stacey Ceron with BC Transit.

According to data from Finding Balance B.C., falling is the cause of 95% of hip fractures in B.C. residents over 65.
