KAMLOOPS — Last week, the B.C. Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education teamed up to delay the start of school by an extra week to help implement additional safety measures throughout the education system.

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to surge, with over 9,000 cases of the virus reported over the weekend. The extra week was added to the holiday break to help ensure schools were prepared to welcome students back safely.

“During the week – the four days that staff come back – that’s an opportunity to delve into how are we going to make these conditions work,” Dr. Rhonda Nixon explains. “Luckily – and maybe it’s not so lucky – we’ve lived this for some time. Schools are safe places, and staff are extremely good at implementing the conditions.”

The province suggested only students with extra needs or parents who are deemed essential workers come back to school this week. According to SD 73 Superintendent Dr. Rhonda Nixon, that additional safety information was contained in an addendum issued by the province.

“The addendum contained much of what we’ve seen at the beginning of COVID,” Dr. Nixon says. “A lot of the staggered starts, ensuring we reduce crowding at transition times. Also, making sure that we reinforce daily health checks and the practices we’ve had in place – wearing masks, daily hand etiquette, making sure we stay home if we’re sick.”
