B.C. reports 4,383 new COVID-19 cases, nearly 2,000 higher than previous daily high

KAMLOOPS — B.C. reported 4,383 new COVID-19 cases for Thursday (Dec. 30), nearly 2,000 more than the daily record.

Locally, 501 of the new cases were reported in Interior Health. Active cases increased to 17,357 in the province (up by 1,343 since Wednesday) and 1,713 in Interior Health (up by 137).

Hospitalizations increased to 211 in the province (up by five) but remained the same in intensive care at 66.

The B.C. Health Ministry says there have been 2,825 cases of the Omicron variant the province (up by 373) with 152 of those are in Interior Health (up by 38).

Elsewhere, 2,319 new cases were reported in Fraser Health (7,940 active), 977 in Vancouver Coastal Health (6,424), 460 in Island Health (856), and 122 in Northern Health (422).

One new death was reported in Interior Health over the past 24 hours for a provincial total of 2,420.

Six new healthcare facility outbreaks were declared in Fraser Health for a provincial active total of 13, including Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops.

As of Thursday (Dec. 30), 88 per cent (4,388,068) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 82.9 per cent (4,131,506) have received their second.
