KAMLOOPS — The Canadian world junior team is in the midst of final preparations for the tournament. Canada plays Russia on Thursday in an exhibition game, one Logan Stankoven won’t play in.

Right now, Stankoven has been skating in practice as the 13th and 14th forward alongside 16-year-old Connor Bedard.

“I don’t care what position I’m playing or what role I get, I’m just excited and pretty thankful to be on this team,” Stankoven told CFJC Today last week.

While his exact role to start the tournament won’t be finalized until after the game, his dad Wes is telling Logan to keep doing his thing and he’ll eventually get an opportunity.

“I just said as an 18 year old, they’re going to give the 19-year-olds a bit more opportunities and keep working hard and be supportive,” said Wes. “If someone gets injured and someone comes down with the bug or virus, you might be called upon. You just ride with it and do your best. That’s all you can do.”

The Stankovens aren’t exactly sure of their plans, but hope to travel to Edmonton to see Logan, whether he plays or not. Like many Canadian families, it’s been a holiday tradition in the Stankoven family.

“Since I was a kid watching at Christmas time, and since Logan was a young boy, we’d always watch as well at Christmas. A bit of a family tradition. We’re looking forward to it,” said Wes.

Logan added, “I know my parents are really proud of me. I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done for me. They’re a big part of where I am today and why I made this team. They’ve made so many sacrifices for me, so to have my whole family there, including my sister [Macie], is going to be pretty cool.”

There is 50 per cent capacity at Rogers Arena in Edmonton with tickets reserved for Team Canada families. The Stankovens hope Logan can home with another gold medal.

“It would be great for them to win a gold medal. Do your best. We’re super proud of him,” noted Wes.

The tournament starts Boxing Day when Canada plays Czechia in Edmonton.
