MERRITT, B.C. — A Merritt man was sentenced to 285 days in jail and given a 12-month probation and lifetime firearms prohibition on Monday (Dec. 20) after a standoff with police last year.

Merritt RCMP say Tyler James Collins pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm, crossbow, prohibited weapon, prohibited device, ammunition, and prohibited ammunition or explosive while prohibited.

On May 27, 2020, officers searched a home on the 1600-block of Bann Street after police received multiple reports that a local couple had committed assaults, one involving a firearm. RCMP say after a short standoff, five people were taken into custody.

“Our search of the residence yielded a Remington 870 shotgun, a compound bow, replica handguns, a replica machine gun, gun powder, ammunition, body armor, and hard drugs,” Sgt. Josh Roda says. “We were very pleased to take these items out of the hands of people that shouldn’t have them.”
