Salvation Army kettles short $500k in B.C. but Kamloops location is on-track

KAMLOOPS — The Salvation Army kettle campaign is short $500,000 of its holiday donation goal of $5 million in British Columbia.

In some communities, kettles are down as much as 50 per cent compared to last year.

However, the Kamloops location is on track to reach its goal of $240,000.

The Christmas kettle campaign enables the Salvation Army to work with struggling individuals and families and provide the necessities: food, clothing and shelter.

The Kamloops Salvation Army has raised $150,000 in its kettle campaign so far this year, and it is optimistic that by Dec. 24 it will hit the mark — but it could use more kettle ball volunteers.

“We have some spots that we’re still trying to fill. We’re still struggling to get some volunteers in those shifts,” said Captain Kelly Fifield, Officer at the Kamloops Salvation Army.

“However, we are seeing people step up once again. We are seeing those donors come in. We are doing well. We are on par to meet our goal if all continues to go well,” she said.

Donations also support the Salvation Army’s life-changing programs, such as substance abuse recovery, and housing supports for those suffering from poverty.

Last week, $1,500 was taken from Kamloops kettles during two separate thefts — but thanks to the Kamloops community, the organization was able to replenish what was lost.

“It’s something that we never want to see happen but our community has stepped up,” Fifield continued.

“We’ve seen people reach out and just be upset that it even happened. Recognizing that we serve a lot of vulnerable people in our community so those funds do go to good use. And so, we’ve had a couple of people step up and say ‘We want to make a donation to help cover off what was lost.'”
