CP NewsAlert: Residential school victims named newsmaker of the year: CP poll

Dec 15, 2021 | 7:01 AM

Children who didn’t come home from residential schools have been chosen newsmaker of the year in a survey by The Canadian Press.

News editors say the discovery of unmarked graves at the former schools forced Canadians to reassess the country’s history and current relationship with Indigenous people.

They say it’s a story that won’t soon be forgotten.

Murray Sinclair headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as it heard from survivors and their families about abuses at the schools.

He says finding the graves made people think about their own children and grandchildren.

He says it also made people question how itcould have happened and what needs to be done to repair the relationship with Indigenous people.

The schoolchildren received 56 out of 88 votes from editors.

There were 14 votes for Canada’s health workers and nine for Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadians released after they spent nearly three years in a Chinese prison.
