SOUND OFF: People need support more than ever this year

Dec 10, 2021 | 8:46 AM

It’s been a long year, and most of us are looking forward to setting our worries aside over the holidays and enjoying some quality time with our loved ones — ever mindful of the continuing pandemic, of course.

In some parts of the province however, gathering with family and friends for a special meal over a beautifully decorated table might not be in the cards. Many individuals and families remain displaced after their communities were devastated by catastrophic wildfires, floods and slides.

Others may be lucky to still have their homes, but are dealing with the fallout from the lingering pandemic. Perhaps they had to shut down their business for good. Maybe they are workers who lost their jobs or faced fewer shifts and a reduction in income. Or perhaps they’re suffering from the physical and mental toll that COVID-19 has taken on them.

Throughout all these negative circumstances, it has been wonderful to see British Columbians step up to help those in need with offerings of shelter, food, basic necessities and personal support. With the holidays approaching, it’s more important than ever to give where you live, if you’re able.

In the Shuswap, we have a number of great local organizations who support the most vulnerable members of our society. Please consider contributing food or cash donations to Second Harvest or the Salvation Army Food Bank in Salmon Arm, the Eagle Valley Community Resource Centre in Sicamous, the Sorrento Food Bank, the Enderby Resource Centre Food Bank, the Armstrong Food Bank or the Glad Tidings brown bag program in Armstrong. The demand for food bank services is growing not only in the Shuswap but throughout B.C., and many families need your help to access nutritious options.

The Shuswap Area Family Emergency Society, or SAFE Society, continues to work hard to end violence against women, children and families. They help women fleeing abusive situations, providing them with access to transitional housing, counselling services and many other resources. They rely heavily on support from the community, and donations can be made online.

The Shuswap chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association is another organization worthy of our support. It offers wellness services, housing supports, and resources to address mental health issues for people of all ages. You can provide hope to those living with mental illness by making a contribution here.

These are just a few of the many social service agencies helping those living in the Shuswap and surrounding area. It’s been a tough year for everyone, perhaps yourself included — so please consider these organizations in your holiday giving this year, or reach out to them if you’re in need of a little extra support yourself.

Remember that it’s okay to not be okay, especially under the extraordinary circumstances of 2021. I wish you all the best in the coming year.
