Blazers select forward and defenceman in WHL US Prospects Draft
KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers went to the Alaska and Arizona well in the 2021 Western Hockey League (WHL) US Prospects Draft.
In the first round, the Blazers took forward Mac Swanson with the 10th overall pick. Swanson, a 5’6” forward from Anchorage, Alaska, scored 71 points (29 goals and 42 assists) in 32 games for Team Alaska in U-14 AAA in the United States in the 2020-21 season.
The Blazers then took 5’8” defenceman Sam Webster from Chandler, Ariz. with the 35th overall pick in the second round. Webster has scored three points (two goals and one assist) in eight games so far for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes in U-15 AAA.
However, like the WHL Bantam Draft and Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, the Blazers selecting Swanson and Webster in the US Prospects Draft does not mean they will commit to Kamloops. It only guarantees the Blazers that they have Swanson and Webster’s rights if they decide to play in the WHL.
