TIME TO SHOVEL

Volunteer Kamloops looking for Snow Angels volunteers

KAMLOOPS — The first real snowfall of the year arrived over the weekend in Kamloops and the Snow Angels program is putting out the call for volunteers.

People who sign up are assigned to a senior or person with mobility limitations that lives near them. Each time it snows, they make sure their driveway and walkway are cleared.

“We have a lot of seniors and people with mobility issues that live on their own still and this is a way to help them keep their independence,” Snow Angels Coordinator Anita Jacobsen explains. “This time of year, it’s kind of treacherous out there to come out and try to shovel themselves, and they simply can’t do it. So we need some snow angels to come and help take care of the rest of the seniors in our communities.”

The program has about 100 seniors registered each year, and volunteer sign-ups hover around 75 people. This year, Volunteer Kamloops hopes to have a full roster of shovelers.

“Businesses, if they want to do it as a team challenge, sports teams or church groups, whatever. If you do it as a group then you can take turns doing it,” Jacobsen suggests, “It is a commitment for the whole winter and you know what we get for snow, so it can be a busy time, but it’s really, really fulfilling.”

As an added perk, volunteers will also be eligible for some free pizza over the course of the season from Pizza Now.

Senior registration is open until the end of the year. To inquire about getting on the list, call Volunteer Kamloops at 250-372-8313 to connect with the program coordinator. Volunteer sign-ups can be done online at volunteerkamloops.org.
