Blazers Teddy Bear Toss returns in person, RIH Foundation asking for online donations

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers Teddy Bear Toss is taking a hybrid route for 2021.

While the teddy bear toss returns in person during the Blazers game Friday (Dec. 10) at the Sandman Centre against the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) Foundation encourages supporters to donate online.

Children in the pediatric department at RIH are comforted with stuffed animals to keep them company during their stay, but the RIH Foundation says the hospital can’t accept any physical items due to COVID-19 health and safety parameters.

Online donations will go directly towards topping up the RIH pediatric department’s low stuffy inventory, and the stuffed animals collected on gameday will be distributed amongst other community organizations in need of comfort care items for children.

Tim O’Donovan, Blazers assistant general manager, says the virtual teddy bear toss in 2020 raised just over $10,000. This year, the RIH Foundation has a goal of raising $5,000 to ensure RIH’s youngest patients have a cuddly friend to depend on in a time of need.
