Phase 3 day access delayed for Merritt residents due to river levels rising

MERRITT — The City of Merritt is delaying Thursday’s (Dec. 2) day access for Phase 3 residents.

Phase 3 residents have been given day-access to their properties all week and were set to continue today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — this has now been delayed until further notice due to water levels rising in the Coldwater River.

Merritt is currently on another flood watch as the province’s third atmospheric river passes through the Coquihalla Highway between Merritt and Hope.

Any precipitation from this could lead to another flood, and to be safe, the City is taking extra precautions.

Merritt Emergency Centre Information Officer, Alan Stebbing, told CFJC News that the river is expected to peak around 10 a.m.

He says Phase 3 residents should keep their eye on the City of Merritt’s website and social media accounts for updates as to when they can head in for day access. The restriction could be lifted at any time today if the water in the Coldwater River stops rising.
