MERRITT, B.C. — Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart is calling on provincial government officials to visit Merritt and view the devastation caused by the Coldwater River flood.

Tegart stopped at Crossroads Community Church (2990 Voght St., Merritt, B.C.) which has become a community hub for residents effected by the Coldwater River Flood. She was also given a tour of the city’s devastation, where the river burst its banks and damaged several hundred homes.

“You’re just sick in your heart for the people who live there,” Tegart told CFJC News at Crossroads Community Church. “Amazing to be here and to see the outpouring of the support in the community, but it’s going to be a long haul. And I think that unless you’ve been here and seen it, it’s hard to understand the impact.”

Tegart is calling on provincial officials to go to Merritt and that residents are waiting for their leadership. She says she has personally invited Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth and Transportation Minister Rob Fleming for a visit.

“We’re looking at the Highway 8 corridor and the devastation through that area,” Tegart said. “I think that the provincial government needs to have a presence so that their ministers have actually seen the destruction and understand how devastating it is.”

Crossroads Community Church is open for residents to pick up groceries and essential supplies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday.
