Coroner classifies 2020 death of Kamloops man as accidental drowning

KAMLOOPS – The death of 37-year-old Brandon Thomas Malkinson in the spring of 2020 has been classified as an accidental drowning with a combined drug toxicity, with fentanyl and methamphetamine as a contributing factor.

Malkinson’s body was found in the North Thompson River in Kamloops on April 9, 2020.

In her report, Coroner Susan Barth found a lethal level of fentanyl and a recreational use level of methamphetamine in Malkinson’s system.

In her report, Barth wrote there was no evidence of a traumatic injury and referred to an RCMP investigation that found no evidence of foul play.
