MERRITT, B.C. — Temporary access for Phase Three properties has been reinstated between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for Monday (Nov. 29).

According to the City of Merritt, working with the BC River Forecast Centre, conditions have stabilized in the Coldwater River. Although the city says the Phase Three area remains under evacuation order and no resident should be there outside of designated hours. Access will be reassessed daily as another atmospheric river is forecast to hit B.C. on Tuesday (Nov. 30).

Merritt Mayor Linda Brown says the banks of the Coldwater River were able to prevent flooding by holding back a torrent of 177m3 per second of water.

City staff, Canadian Armed Forces members, and other supporting agencies and crews are continuing work to protect critical infrastructure, repair dikes, and reinforce banks along the Coldwater River where it is safe to do so. The City states flood protection measures are also being placed at strategic locations and engineers continue to assess the riverbanks.

Properties in Phase Three and Phase Four remain under evacuation order. The City says the safety of responders is the top priority and their well-being will not be jeopardized in situations where people choose to not follow evacuation orders.

Phase Two residents were allowed to return home on Saturday (Nov. 27) and Phase One residents returned on Tuesday (Nov. 23).

Interior Health says Nicola Valley Hospital is still set to open the emergency department from noon to 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The emergency department will operate daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. starting Tuesday (Nov. 30).

Merritt residents can receive evacuation alerts and order notifications by registering for VoyentAlert! on voyent-alert.com or downloading the app on the Apple App Store or Google Play.
