Interior Health to begin offering pediatric COVID-19 vaccinations in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — This week, Interior Health will begin offering Pfizer-BioNtech pediatric vaccines for children aged 5 to 11.

Interior Health Medical Health Officer Dr. Carol Fenton says the Health Canada approved vaccinations contain a lower dose but use the same mRNA technology.

Like adult vaccines, the pediatric immunizations will be a two-dose series, with the second dose available eight weeks after the first.

“There were no serious side effects registered in the clinical trials, or among the American populations who have received the vaccine already. So it looks really, really good in terms of strong protection combined with really good safety information,” Fenton says.

Child immunizations will be offered through the public health unit on Thursday (Dec. 2) for now. But starting Dec. 6, the 5 to 11 age category will be combined with the existing 12 and over immunization clinic out of the Northills Shopping Centre.

“I’m told that we are starting every Thursday at Kamloops Public Health, and then as of Dec. 6 we will have the pediatric vaccine available at the Northills Clinic Monday through Friday,” she says.

To access the vaccine, parents will need to register for their child, and then an invitation to book an appointment will be sent. Dr. Fenton notes Interior Health does have some flexibility when it comes to multiple bookings on the same day.

“If you yourself are due for your first or second dose, or you’ve been invited to book an appointment for your booster, if you book yourself and your child on the same day you can go together,” she says. “You just need to make sure you book them on the same day so we know we have the right supply for you.”

As more COVID-19 immunizations are booked, Interior Health adds that flu shots are still available. Dr. Fenton says when trying to get those vaccinations, residents don’t need to worry about timing them apart from one another.

“There’s no waiting period in between COVID and flu shots, so you can go on the same day if you like.”
