Highway 3 and 99 re-open for essential travel, provincial state of emergency extended

KAMLOOPS — Highway 3 between Princeton and Hope and Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet re-opened for essential travel Monday (Nov. 29) afternoon.

Due to ongoing cleanup and repairs, drivers can expect delays on this section of Highway 3. Vehicle weight restrictions are in place for Highway 99, as only vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight under 14,500 kilograms are permitted between Pemberton and Lillooet.

However, Highway 1 between Abbotsford and Chilliwack remains closed, as does Highway 1 from just east of Highway 9 and Hope, through the Bridal Falls area.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says with another storm approaching the south coast, it will continue to monitor the weather closely to determine if further closures are required.

All current orders related to non-essential travel on Highways 3, 7, and 99 remain in place until highways begin to re-open.

Additionally, the B.C. government extended the provincial state of emergency and fuel restriction until Dec. 14, 2021, as heavy rainfall is expected for coastal and southwestern B.C.

The temporary limit of 30 litres of fuel per trip to a gas station for non-essential vehicles applies to all fuel suppliers in the Lower Mainland-to-Hope region, the Sea-to-Sky region, Sunshine Coast, the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. Kamloops and area, the Interior, and Northern B.C. are not affected.

Essential vehicles will continue to have unrestricted access to fuel as required, using predominately commercial trucking gas stations (cardlock gas stations).

“We are confident that by extending the order, we can maintain a secure supply of fuel over the next few days while infrastructure repairs continue on the Trans Mountain Pipeline,” Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation Bruce Ralston said.

Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) is available for people in areas affected by flooding and landslides from Nov. 14 to 16. DFA is open to homeowners, residential tenants, businesses, charitable organizations, local governments, Indigenous communities, and farmers.

There are currently 3,606 properties on evacuation orders and 7,402 properties on evacuation alert since the initial atmospheric river from Nov. 14 to 16.
