KAMLOOPS — A group of students from Kamloops School of the Arts (KSA) has made it to the top 10 in a provincial film competition.

School District 73 says the media arts students from KSA are among the finalists in the Zoom Film Festival — a popular student film competition in B.C.

Their entry, a short film titled Brassica Rapa (The Turnip), is the creation of KSA students Abby Janota, Elias Humphrey, Keziah Vollans and Adrian Popowich, with the help of their teacher, Kirk Macfarlane.

“Basically, we were given a prop and a theme on Thursday at 5 o’clock and we had to have a 30 second to 5-minute video edited and submitted on Saturday by 5 o’clock,” explained Macfarlane. “The theme was redemption and the prop was a turnip. We decided to do a James Bond/Austin powers heist film.”

Winners will be selected by a panel of BC film industry professionals such as actors, cinematographers, editors, and visual effects artists. Categories include Best Overall, Best Technical, Best Performance and Best Cinematography.

From there, winners will be announced at the Zoom Film Festival awards show on December 4.

The district notes that due to road closures, the KSA group will be unable to attend the red carpet but will live stream the event from Kamloops.
