Kamloops council puts pressure on Interior Health to answer questions about Royal Inland Hospital

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council is putting the pressure on Interior Health (IH/IHA) to give answers about staffing shortages and other stressors Royal Inland Hospital is facing.

At a council meeting on Tuesday (Nov. 16), councillors expressed their frustration with the health authority’s lack of answers.

“$500 million has been spent on this project that’s being built that’s not going to be able to be staffed. We as taxpayers have provided that money to Interior Health to get these facilities built,” said Councillor Mike O’Reilly.

“It’s great to have a pretty building but if it’s not operational it doesn’t mean much,” he added.

Council is calling on Susan Brown, President and CEO of Interior Health, to attend a council meeting to shed light on some of the challenges Royal Inland Hospital is facing.

“The communications, quite frankly — it’s an embarrassment to IHA,” said O’Reilly.

“And what happens is it actually leaves a void in the community that’s searching for information and they go to social media. Yet, on the flip side, we’re hearing from the professionals saying, ‘Don’t listen to social media, listen to IHA,” he added.

This week, the City will be extending an invite to Brown to attend a council meeting and discuss Royal Inland Hospital.
