Operation Red Nose kicks off 2021 season in Kamloops with celebration

Nov 9, 2021 | 4:32 PM

KAMLOOPS — Operation Red Nose had its kick-off celebration today after a one-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The volunteer service offers people a safe ride home, in your own vehicle and in the company of caring volunteers, during the holiday season.

It relies on donations that help support amateur athletes through Pacific Sport in Kamloops.

Operation Red Nose will be following all COVID-19 protocols and guidelines.

“Whether you be a volunteer or client, you have to be double vaccinated to use our services. COVID-19 has been our number one priority through this entire development and working with our committee to make sure everyone involved is safe,” Elsa Poppleton, coordinator at Operation Red Nose Kamloops.

Before it halted in 2020, Operation Red Nose Kamloops saw $33,000 in donations in 2019 — from more than 1,200 rides.

Its goal is to stop people from drinking and driving by getting them home safely.

The cause is invaluable to the RCMP, especially during the holidays when there is typically uptick in drinking and driving.

“The week of October 22, just that weekend, there were more than a dozen impaired drivers removed from the roadway with 90/30. that means they received 30-day vehicle impound with a 90-day driving prohibition,” explained Cst. Crystal Evelyn of Kamloops RCMP.

“That’s just a fraction of the impaired drivers that are probably out there,” she added.

Operation Red Nose Kamloops will start operating on November 26.

The organization is looking for volunteers, anyone interested can email kamloops@operationrednose.com.
