COVID-19 outbreak declared at Sunnybrae Bible College; province reports 1,438 new cases

KAMLOOPS — B.C. reported 1,438 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend with 321 of them in Interior Health.

Active cases decreased in B.C. to 4,282 (down by 201 since Friday), while Interior Health saw a marginal decrease to 683 (down by three). Of the provincial active cases, 407 individuals are in hospital and 121 are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

Elsewhere, there were 575 new cases in Fraser Health (1,832 active), 221 in Island Health (615), 166 in Northern Health (608) and 155 in Vancouver Coastal Health (485). No new cases were reported from people who reside outside of Canada, although that active count sits at 59.

The three-day breakdown is as follows:

  • Nov. 5 to 6: 553 new cases
  • Nov. 6 to 7: 462 new cases
  • Nov. 7 to 8: 423 new cases

In the past 72 hours, 17 new deaths were reported, one in Interior Health, for a provincial total of 2,218.

A COVID-19 outbreak was declared at Millar College of the Bible in Sunnybrae. Three new healthcare facility outbreaks were declared at Burnaby Hospital, Maplewood House and Revera Parkwood Manor in Fraser Health. There are 33 active outbreaks, with five of them in Interior Health, including Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre and Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

Interior Health reports 25 cases (19 patients and six staff) with one death connected to the outbreak at Royal Inland Hospital. Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre has six cases (four residents and two staff) and Millar College of the Bible has 31.

As of Monday (Nov. 8), 90.3 per cent (4,184,112) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 86.0 per cent (3,986,497) have received their second.

Vaccine status

Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 4, 3,346 British Columbians tested positive for COVID-19. Of them, 2,018 were unvaccinated (60.3 per cent), 1,154 were fully vaccinated (34.5 per cent), and 174 were partially vaccinated (5.2 per cent). Per 100,000 population after adjusting for age, the unvaccinated accounted 255, the partially vaccinated accounted for 60.9, and the fully vaccinated accounted for 26.6 cases.

From Oct. 22 to Nov. 4, B.C. saw 460 patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Of them, 297 were unvaccinated (64.6 per cent), 135 were fully vaccinated (29.3 per cent), and 28 were partially vaccinated (6.1 per cent). Per 100,000 population after adjusting for age, the unvaccinated accounted for 58, the partially vaccinated accounted for 14.7, and the fully vaccinated accounted for three hospitalizations.
