BLOG: The drive from Kamloops to Jasper and everything in between

The drive from Kamloops to Jasper might be one of my favourite Canadian road trips. With two incredible stops in between, it’s a trip anyone can take on the weekend.

The beauty of starting your trip from Kamloops is being able to explore a vibrant city with delicious food, but it also gives you the opportunity to make some exciting stops along the way.

First up: Wells Gray Provincial Park. It’s truly a hiker’s haven and less than a 1.5-hour drive from Kamloops. Wells Gray is full of waterfalls, glacier-fed lakes, ancient volcanic fields and more.

Forewarning — or perhaps, something to excite you — there’s a good chance you’ll come across wildlife in Wells Gray. The park is home to grizzly bears, moose, wolves and more. I didn’t see any wildlife when I went, which was pretty disappointing. I still have yet to see a moose bathing. Yes, that specifically.

It’s something I am fixated on seeing now that I live in British Columbia and it deeply upsets me that I haven’t come across it yet. Coming from Ontario, I was just convinced that’s what goes on over here. Just a bunch of moose bathing in lakes.

I met a guy on a plane recently who had moved here from Ontario a few months ago. He showed me pictures he took of a moose he spotted bathing in a lake. He’s only been here for a few months and he’s already seen it! I was jealous. Anyways, I digress.

Once you immerse yourself in the wonder of Wells Gray, head over to Mount Robson, just a 3.5-hour drive away. That’s where my friend and I stayed on our road trip. It’s a must-see.

I also suggest going in September. It was the perfect weather for a hike up the mountain. The marked trails have intensity signs to help you decipher which hike is best suited for you.

The best part about being at Mount Robson in mid-September was all of the colourful wildflowers. With the backdrop of Mount Robson, it was outer-worldly for this city girl.

The last stop on our trip was Jasper, a place that needs no introduction. Jasper is as incredible as Banff, with less tourists (depending on when you go). If you love hiking, kayaking on glacier water, and soaking in the charm of an older town, Jasper is a great place to go — and it’s only a 20-minute drive from Mount Robson.
