KAMLOOPS — After a 6-0 blowout victory the day prior, the Kamloops Blazers nearly avoided an upset on the road against the last-place Victoria Royals Saturday (Nov. 6) evening.

Despite outshooting the Royals 12-6 after the first, it was the Blazers trailing 2-0. Tanner Scott scored twice: one on a shorthanded breakaway and the other on a sharp angle with 33 seconds remaining.

The Blazers rebounded in the second period. Quinn Schmiemann and Tye Spencer scored early, although that’s all they could score for regulation. Backup goaltender Dylan Ernst made 10 saves to keep the Blazers in it heading to overtime.

Schmiemann played hero for the Blazers in overtime, scoring his second of the game and the winner on a 4-on-3 power play.

The Blazers exit Vancouver Island with an 11-1-0 record, good for 22 points in 12 games and first in the Western Hockey League Western Conference. They travel to Kelowna on Wednesday (Nov. 10) to take on their rival Rockets.
