New trail in Aberdeen aims to give beginner mountain bikers a fun and safe introduction

KAMLOOPS — After a winter of snow, moisture, and hikers to help compact the dirt, Kamloops residents interested in mountain biking for the first time will have a trail suited for them.

The Kamloops Bike Riders Association (KBRA) and volunteers built a trail loop over a kilometre long, that will be the new Aberdeen Kids Bike Park, over the final two weekends in October. It’s the second project the KBRA has had in association with the City of Kamloops after building a bike park near Dufferin Elementary School.

KBRA Vice-President Cam Marshall says they’ve used the park near Dufferin for its kids’ program, and it got the ball rolling for creating another trail.

“It’s been a real breath of fresh air,” Marshall says. “That was our kickoff in starting to develop grassroots riding areas where we can develop younger riders or get people who haven’t had a lot of exposure to riding to ride on safe trails that are tailored to those new riders who are learning new skills. There’s a lot more terrain; it’s a significantly larger area.”

While the trail in Aberdeen is deemed multi-use, in fact, Marshall encourages hikers and snowshoers to walk through the trail to help solidify the dirt, it’s intended goal is to get more Kamloops mountain bikers ready for other challenging paths throughout the area.

Marshall describes the Aberdeen trail as having a two-metre-wide climb trail, not having a lot of rocks or roots, and having enough fun turns while being conservative enough for first time riders to not have their confidence shaken.

The KBRA expects the Aberdeen trail to be ready by May 2022.
