Ken Gillis re-elected as chair of TNRD board of directors

KAMLOOPS — Ken Gillis has been re-elected chair of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District board of directors.

Gillis has been the chair since 2018. He says 2021 was one of his most challenging years as director of the TNRD.

Earlier in the year, the TNRD’s board of directors moved forward with an audit of its entire organization after an investigation revealed lavish spending by former CAO Sukh Gill — who has since been replaced.

The investigation is being done by the BDO accounting firm.

“We are going to have a report coming forward to us from BDO before Christmas. While I wouldn’t say I am looking forward to it, I am certainly looking forward to the storm that will probably ensue and having the ability to put that behind us,” said Gillis.

This past wildfire season was a huge challenge for the regional district.

With more than 160 structures lost and more than 300,000 hectares were destroyed, Gillis says the BC Wildfire Service needs an improved action plan for future wildfires.

“In terms of the response to the disastrous heat wave and the fires that flowed from that. So, I am hoping that we can make some changes and have those changes effective before the next summer from hell comes upon us,” he told CFJC News.
