SOUND OFF: CleanBC — Our roadmap to 2030

PEOPLE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA continue to live with the impacts of climate change. We’ve seen it through dramatic weather events such as this summer’s unprecedented heat dome and intense wildfires. People across the province – and especially those in the Interior and Kamloops region – have become increasingly aware of the profound impacts of a changing climate

In 2017, it was very clear that we needed to prepare for a new future, a future built on strength of the economy and the health of communities. And to introduce cleaner ways to generate energy, more integrated transportation systems and better homes and buildings that will generate lower carbon emissions. These are just a few of the advances that are included in our recently launched CleanBC Roadmap.

The CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 is our plan to reach our climate targets and to accelerate and expand actions brought forward over the last two years. A number of these actions have already shown signs of early success. We are five years ahead of schedule in the transition to zero-emission vehicles. We have expanded B.C.’s electric vehicle charging stations. We helped expand public transit across B.C. while continuing to support BC Transit and TransLink’s plans to transition their fleets to low-emitting and electric buses. We also partnered with the federal government for Safe Restart funding to make sure people across B.C. could continue to have access to safe, reliable and affordable public transit throughout the pandemic. And we’ve made it free for kids 12 and under to ride the bus.

We are creating new partnerships bringing together B.C.’s expanding clean tech sector with traditional industries to position B.C. products and services for new and evolving markets. For example, through CleanBC we’ve co-invested with Domtar in their Kamloops mill to improve energy efficiency, reduce fossil fuel use and support local jobs. Increasingly global investors are recognizing climate-centred technologies and companies as critical in the transition to living better on the planet. British Columbia is ideally positioned to take advantage of these new opportunities and the Roadmap supports that case.

Like all maps, the purpose of the Roadmap is to set the direction and offer choices to guide our efforts as we continue to track progress. It allows us to anticipate challenges and potential course changes. It expands affordability measures so that costs and benefits are shared equally as we take action.

Ultimately the success of the Roadmap will be determined by our choices and their impact on the health of the environment and the communities we value. It is about creating a future where our children and their children have new opportunities moving forward, while making sure we do so in a fair and equal approach that leaves no one behind.
