KAMLOOPS — Thanks to overnight freezing rain, drivers in the Thompson, Nicola and Shuswap regions got a reminder of the upcoming winter weather conditions Tuesday morning (Nov. 2).

DriveBC reported vehicle incidents on the Trans Canada Highway near Salmon Arm and the Coquihalla near Merritt, while in Kamloops drivers reported to B-100 of slippery conditions on roads such as the Overlanders Bridge.

Cpl. Mike Halskov with BC Highway Patrol says drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions as they leave their communities.

“Things can always look just fantastic when you’re down at the city level, and it can change quickly as you leave the city and start navigating the higher passes, like the Coquihalla or the Connector,” Halskov says. “We want to remind motorists they need to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, which can include dropping temperatures, which can bring black ice or snow and conditions where one should be watching their speed. Posted speed limits are assumed ideal driving conditions and we’re getting to the season where they’re not ideal.”

Drivers are reminded to ensure their vehicle is properly equipped with winter tread and carry chains with them that may needed on some mountain highways. Halskov says they should also ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition prepare for multi-hour waits without resources by packing extra warm clothing, food and water, and a charged cell phone.

Other tips include:

  • Clearing windows of snow or frost
  • Making sure their taillights can be seen
  • Giving themselves more space

If possible, Halskov recommends traveling during daylight hours.
