KAMLOOPS — A charitable organization is helping underserved and marginalized youth in Kamloops between the ages of 17 and 30 get digital and information technology (IT) jobs.

NPower Canada will provide youth who have barriers to employment with a free 15-week digital and professional skills training program, supplied by Microsoft and Google.

“At the end of the 15 weeks, they’re ready to enroll in an entry level position as either a Junior IT analyst or a data analyst. What we do after the 15 weeks is we help place them in the position when they’re done with the program,” said Rune Mikkelsen, Regional Director for BC at NPower Canada.

“We don’t just place them in a placement of three months or whatever, we actually place them — transition them — right into a real job.”

Applicants only need a high school diploma (from any country) and have to be eligible to work in Canada.

NPower hopes to educate and employ up to 40 youth in Kamloops. It has an 80 per cent employment rate for those who have taken the program.

“Running next to that we work on personal skills, we work on job maintenance, resume writing. We can put you in that job, but it’s also important for us that it’s a sustainable job both for you and the employer,” Mikkelsen continued.

“We work a lot on personal skills, like job maintenance, how to function in a work environment. It is a wrap around service with a holistic approach,” he said.

Youth can apply online here. The deadline to apply is January 24, 2022.
