NANAIMO — Island Health is warning drug users about an increasing number of overdoses in Nanaimo, triggering an advisory.

The advisory was issued on Tuesday, Oct. 26 and is scheduled to last for at least one week.

Overdose alerts are issued after a number of factors are taking into consideration including ambulance callout volume, reports from overdose prevention sites and recent fatalities.

An overdose alert for Nanaimo was first applied this year in April, which was extended three times before being withdrawn in May.

A follow-up overdose advisory for Nanaimo was announced in mid-July.

25 people in Nanaimo have died from toxic drugs between January through July, according to BC Coroners Service data.

The overwhelming majority of overdoses in the province and locally are linked to fentanyl.
