KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says it’ll be more on top of clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and bus stops this winter.

City council this week approved an additional $120,000 to better take care of Kamloops sidewalks, which will now be cleared by the parks department.

The city will also speed up the timeframe of the snow-clearing, starting within 24 hours of a snow event, opposed to waiting a day after it begins.

“Previously, we only had one sidewalk machine for the whole city at any given time going, so we’re going to double that,” said Manager of Parks and Civic Facilities Jeff Putnam. “Also previously, the sidewalk machines didn’t go out until the snowfall event had ended, so what we’re doing is once we see the first snowflake, we’re going to be sending two machines out on the sidewalks.

The 24-hour timeframe will apply to clearing both sidewalks and all 250 bus stops across the city.

“We’re going to have a crew every night shovelling those and removing the windrows so the bus can actually come up close to the curb,” said Putnam. “And if someone’s in a wheelchair and needs assistance, they don’t have to step over a windrow and ice to get there. They can go right onto the threshold of the bus, so we’re really excited about that.”

Overall, the city says the budget for this winter is about $2.5 million.
