CITY VACCINE MANDATE

City employees not vaccinated by Dec. 15 may to have to go through testing: CAO Trawin

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says vaccine mandates put in place for provincial and federal government workers started conversations at city hall about a similar policy to keep workers safe.

City CAO David Trawin says there were employees expressing concern about working with people who are unvaccinated, which in part prompted the mandate.

“We have let staff know that we would like you to be double-vaccinated by Dec. 15. We are working on a policy whereby if you’re not double-vaccinated, there are other options,” said Trawin. “It might be an education session, potentially we’re looking at testing, plus some other things. I can’t really comment too much on it because there are some logistics involved, which is why we don’t have a policy in place.”

While city employees, contractors and volunteers will need to be fully vaccinated, visitors to city hall and other essential civic facilities will not.

“Correct, visitors will not have to be vaccinated. There’s nothing we can do for that, but I believe from our perspective it’s the municipalities responsibility that it’s employees are safe, whether it be through COVID or any other type of work safe issues, as well as people entering municipal facilities,” he said. “For example, we look at trip-and-falls out there in the public the same way as someone knowing when they come into a civic facility they’re safe.”

Trawin says city councillors, who are not civic employees, do not fall under this mandate.
