KAMLOOPS — For a second year in a row, Kamloops’ Remembrance Day ceremony will limited to only 100 invited guests because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Normally, the commemoration for Remembrance Day is held in Riverside Park and gathers thousands of people. This year’s event will be held at the cenotaph on Battle Street.

The 419 squadron jets will fly over Kamloops, allowing residents to experience some of the ceremony right from their homes.

“It’s a fighter squadron out of Cold Lake, Alta.,” Kamloops Legion President Daniel Martin explained. “There will be four jets, that’s what I’m told, that will be flying over top of us at the ceremony in the morning.”

Roads around the cenotaph on Battle Street will be closed to the public and the ceremony will be streamed on the Kamloops Legion Facebook page.

Poppy donations will be accepted at many businesses all over the city. Canadians wear a poppy to remember armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. The poppy campaign will begin Oct. 29.

“It makes me very happy, as myself, to see that people recognize the fact. and we have to make sure that the new generation know what it represents to them,” Martin said. “So we always ask people to come and talk to us, like, I am a very open person and anyone can come and ask. We have many veterans that gather at the Legion. Anyone can come and ask ‘what does this mean to you?'”
